Sector context

Sourcing for horticulture & growing media

Growing media is judged on whether a crop performs in it, which makes electrical conductivity and pH the parameters that decide usability. Raw coir pith carries salts that must be washed out; buffered material has additionally been treated to displace sodium and potassium from the cation exchange sites.

Those are two different products at two different prices, and the distinction is routinely blurred by suppliers. We establish which one a buyer actually needs before quoting, because substituting one for the other produces a crop failure rather than a quality complaint.

Compression format matters commercially as much as the material. Bale and block density determine how much product fits in a container, and loose compression quietly raises landed cost per usable cubic metre.

  • Washed sold as buffered

    The difference is invisible on inspection but decisive in use. We require the treatment method in writing and verify by testing where the buyer instructs it.

  • Washing water quality

    Achievable EC depends on the water source at the production site, not only on the process. This is checked during supplier screening.

  • Container space wasted by loose compression

    We agree block dimensions against the buyer's loading plan, which is where most avoidable cost sits in this category.
