Sector context

Sourcing for water & air filtration

Coconut shell charcoal is valued as activated carbon feedstock because of its hard, microporous structure. Fixed carbon sets the yield, and ash sets how much of the product is inert material the buyer pays to ship and then has to handle.

The real sourcing difficulty is consistency. Carbonisation in Indonesia is largely small-producer activity, so a good sample proves very little about the next twenty tonnes. Screening producers on repeatability is the whole job.

Some destinations apply additional controls on charcoal imports. Confirming those with the buyer's broker early avoids a shipment that is compliant at origin and inadmissible on arrival.

Buying criteria

What decides acceptance in this sector

These are the parameters we build a specification around, because they are the ones that determine whether a lot is usable.

  1. 01

    Fixed carbon floor

Sets activation yield, and therefore the economics of the whole purchase.

  2. 02

    Ash ceiling

Inert content the buyer ships, handles and disposes of.

  3. 03

    Lot-to-lot repeatability

The dominant risk in this category, and the focus of supplier screening.

  4. 04

    Import admissibility

Destination controls on charcoal confirmed before contracting.

Failure modes

Where sourcing goes wrong here

Screening is built around these, because they are the problems that actually recur in this sector.

  • Sample not representative of supply

We require sampling from the offered lot and screen producers on repeated results, not on a single submission.

  • Destination import controls

Charcoal attracts additional scrutiny in some markets. This is raised during qualification, before an offer is issued.

  • Producer aggregation quality

Material aggregated from many small kilns varies. Screening covers how the aggregator manages that, not just the aggregate result.

A specification, a volume and a destination are enough to start. We come back with what is sourceable, on what terms, and what it depends on.

Documentation we coordinate

  • Commercial Invoice
  • Packing List
  • Bill of Lading
  • Certificate of Origin
  • Certificate of Analysis
  • Phytosanitary Certificate
