About cocopeat
Cocopeat, also called coir pith or coco coir, is the fine spongy material separated from coconut husk during fibre extraction. It is used as a peat substitute in professional horticulture because of its water-holding capacity and air-filled porosity.
The parameters that decide whether a lot is usable are electrical conductivity and pH. Raw coir pith carries salts that must be washed out; buffered material has additionally been treated with calcium nitrate to displace sodium and potassium from the cation exchange sites.
We ask every horticultural buyer for their EC ceiling and whether they need washed or buffered material before quoting, because the two are different products at different prices and the distinction is frequently blurred by suppliers.
